Biography

Associate Professor Desti Kannaiah worked in India, Malaysia, Dubai, Vietnam and Singapore. Prior to joining JCU Singapore in 2011, Dr Desti Kannaiah worked as a Senior Lecturer at the Dubai Campus of Middlesex University London and RMIT University Hanoi, Vietnam. He has been teaching at Undergraduate and Post-graduate levels for the past 36 years, headed the Accounting Department in the private higher education sector in Singapore, and has been an examiner for a number of universities since 1999. Currently, Dr Desti is an external examiner of PhD degree for a number of reputed universities in India. He was also the Course Development Chair for SIM University, Singapore in 2005 and 2006. He has presented several International conference papers and written journal articles in reputed journals and publications across a range of disciplines. Dr Desti is a highly sought-after keynote speaker, guest lecturer and a resource person at international conferences, overseas universities and colleges.

Associate Professor Desti enjoys teaching and working in an academically challenging environment. It is also his desire to add an international and cultural dimension to his targeted position. The ideal career that he envisioned for himself combines teaching and research at a major university, and being involved in consultative roles, which he identifies as the attractions of being an academic in JCU Singapore.

Dr Desti was awarded the Best Lecturer of the Year in 2013 and 2019 by JCU Singapore. He was also awarded the title of “Best Overall Lecturer Award” during his teaching in the private higher education sector before joining JCU.  He carried out extensive academic research and student-needs analysis, before compiling his teaching materials on Financial Accounting, Cost & Management Accounting at Diploma, Higher Diploma and Degree levels in Singapore, which forms the core learning materials for the students. He believes in learner-centred teaching approaches and focuses on guaranteeing learning opportunities that are relevant, meaningful and engaging to students. His professional emphasis is to ensure that each student becomes confidently equipped with the relevant skills required to be successful in the society.

Research Interests

His area of research focus is accounting and finance, particularly management accounting, financial accounting, foreign direct investment and corporate governance. He has been working with local and overseas faculty for the past three decades and has published more than 38 research papers, which are recognised by ERA, SCOPUS, ABS, Springer and ABDC. Associate Professor Desti Kannaiah is also the co-author of "Advanced Cost Accounting" which is used as a resource book for students and educators at university level.  He is supervising a number of research projects for MBA students at JCU Singapore. While he was a supervisor for M.Phil scholars, he is currently an external examiner for the award of PhD degree for many universities since 2007. Outside classroom teaching, his interest lies in supervising Ph.D. scholars in Management accounting and Financial accounting.
