James Cook University’s Graduate Certificate of Career Development is an accredited course designed to enhance your qualifications in the fields of career education and career guidance and counselling. You may choose to further your studies into a Master of Guidance and Counselling.

The Career Industry Council of Australia (CICA) has endorsed the Graduate Certificate of Career Development delivered by James Cook University as meeting the Professional Standards for Australian Career Development Practitioners.

The Graduate Certificate of Career Development offers a pathway into the Master of Guidance and Counselling for those who do not meet the entry requirement concerning an appropriate degree.

Course Structure

3 trimesters per year

Study Program

Students are required to complete 4 core subjects (12 credit points).

  • Foundations of Counselling Theory
  • Career and Leisure Guidance and Counselling
  • Career Development Portfolio Part 1
  • Career Development Portfolio Part 2

Students who have successfully completed a Master of Guidance and Counselling degree or postgraduate equivalent may apply for advanced standing for core subjects Foundations of Counselling Theory and Career and Leisure Guidance and Counselling.

Eligibility & Requirements

Entry Requirements

  • Successful completion of a recognised undergraduate degree
  • Entry requirements for this course are consistent with the Pathways to Qualifications in the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF level 8) Guidelines for Masters degrees. (Further information on AQF can be found at www.aqf.edu.au)

English Requirements

  • IELTS 6.5 (no component lower than 6.0)/TOEFL iBT 90 (with minimum writing score of 21)/TOEFL (paper based) 570 (plus minimum Test of Written English score of 4.5)/Pearson (PTE Academic) 64 or
  • Satisfactory completion of James Cook University English Language Preparatory Program Level 4
  • Students who have successfully completed 2 years of full-time study in English medium may satisfy the English language requirement on a case-by-case basis

Attendance Requirements

As this is a professional training programme, students are required to attend all classes.

Career Outcomes

Graduates will have a specialisation in career development counselling.

*Fees apply to all Singapore residents (Singapore Citizens, Permanent Residents and all pass holders excluding those holding a Student Pass)
