Course overview

Diabetes is an enormous public health and social burden, and is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. As such, prevention and management of diabetes is a major responsibility shared by doctors, nurses, midwives, allied health professionals and healthcare administrators.

James Cook University’s Graduate Certificate of Diabetes Studies is designed to enhance your knowledge and skills in the areas of diabetes education, treatment and prevention, empowering you to function more effectively as a key member of a multidisciplinary healthcare team. The course places particular emphasis on diabetes education and health promotion through lifestyle interventions and behavioural change.

The course is be offered in a blended mode, with online teaching supplemented by an intensive residential component in the third study period. Students will only be required to be in Singapore during this time, with international students able to study flexibly from their home country.

Study Program

Students are required to complete four core subjects (12 credit points)

  • Foundations of Clinical Diabetes
  • Health Education and Self-Management
  • Applied Clinical Diabetes Education
  • Diabetes Studies Capstone

Eligibility & Requirements

Entry Requirements

  • Completion of an AQF Level 7 health-related Bachelor degree or a Bachelor degree in Nursing or other relevant clinically-based health or allied health qualifications from another country (or qualifications recognised by the Division as equivalent), and
  • At least 12 months experience working in their chosen field since undergraduate course completion

English Requirements

  • Applicants of non-English speaking backgrounds must meet the English language proficiency requirements of IELTS 7.0 (with 7.0 in three components and 6.5 in one component) or TOEFL (Internet based) 94 (no component less than 23) or Pearson (PTE Academic) 65 (no component less than 58)

Advanced Standing

Students may apply for advanced standing for previous tertiary study in accordance with the James Cook University Coursework Enrolment Policy and associated procedures in accordance with James Cook University’s Credit transfer procedure.

Career Outcomes

This course will prepare appropriately qualified healthcare professionals to advance their skills and knowledge in the area of diabetes education and management in a variety of settings.

James Cook University is EduTrust Certified. The EduTrust certification scheme is administered by the Committee for Private Education (CPE), a part of SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG). EduTrust requires all students to be covered under a Fee Protection Scheme. In James Cook University, this is provided through an insurance protection scheme. Further, EduTrust also requires that the students must be covered under a medical insurance coverage which has provision for hospitalisation, surgery and treatment costs throughout their course duration. James Cook University will advise in the Standard Student Contract the total amount of insurance payable.
