Course overview

Students who complete the Graduate Certificate of Science are eligible for entry to the Master of Planning and Urban Design and may be granted advanced standing for all subjects completed under the Graduate Certificate.

  • Integrate and apply specialised theoretical and technical knowledge in one or more science disciplines
  • Retrieve, analyse, synthesise and evaluate knowledge from a range of sources
  • Plan and conduct reliable, evidence-based laboratory and/ or field experiments/practices by selecting and applying methods, techniques and tools, as appropriate to one or more science disciplines
  • Organise, analyse and interpret complex scientific data using mathematical, statistical and technological skills
  • Communicate complex scientific ideas, arguments and conclusions clearly and coherently to a variety of audiences through advanced written and oral English language skills and a variety of media
  • Identify, analyse and generate solutions to unpredictable or complex problems, especially related to tropical, rural, remote or Indigenous contexts, by applying scientific knowledge and skills with initiative and high level judgement
  • Explain and apply regulatory requirements, ethical principles and, where appropriate, cultural frameworks, to work effectively, responsibly and safely in diverse contexts
  • Reflect on current skills, knowledge and attitudes to manage their professional learning needs and performance, autonomously and in collaboration with others

Course Structure

3 trimesters per year

SIX CREDIT POINTS FROM:

  • Environmental and Regional Planning
  • Urban Geography and Design
  • Planning Legislation and Professional Practice
  • Introduction to Geographic Information System

Select 3 credit points from the list of approved Graduate Subjects available at the Singapore campus

Urban Design Studio or Advanced Design Communication or Field Studies in Tropical Geography

Eligibility & Requirements

Entry Requirements

  • Completion of an AQF Level 7 bachelor degree in science; or
  • Other qualifications or professional/industry-based experience recognised by the university.

English Requirements

  • Applicants of non-English speaking backgrounds must meet the English language proficiency requirements of IELTS 6 (no component lower than 6.0) / TOEFL (Internet Based) 74 (no component less than 18) / Pearson PTE Academic 52 (no component less than 52);
    or
  • Satisfactory completion of James Cook University Singapore English Language Preparatory Program (ELPP); or
  • Successful completion of other qualifications completed in English Language deemed comparable to Australian standards within the last two years on a case-by-case basis

Advanced Standing

Students may apply for exemption for previous tertiary study where appropriate in accordance with the Advanced Standing and Articulation policy and associated procedures. Advanced standing will be granted only for studies completed in the 10 years prior to the commencement of this course. The maximum advanced standing that will be granted for previous studies is 6 credit points.

Career Outcomes

Students who complete the Graduate Certificate of Science are eligible for entry to the Master of Planning and Urban Design and may be granted advanced standing for all subjects completed under the Graduate Certificate.

Graduates of the Graduate of Science majoring in Planning and Urban Design at James Cook University will be able to integrate and apply a coherent body of theoretical and technical knowledge in the disciplines of planning and urban design, with depth in sustainability principles, tropical urbanism, and disaster management.

James Cook University is EduTrust Certified. The EduTrust certification scheme is administered by the Committee for Private Education (CPE), a part of SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG). EduTrust requires all students to be covered under a Fee Protection Scheme. In James Cook University, this is provided through an insurance protection scheme. Further, EduTrust also requires that the students must be covered under a medical insurance coverage which has provision for hospitalisation, surgery and treatment costs throughout their course duration.
