The Tropical Philanthropy project was conceived by Associate Professor Anita Lundberg with the aim of engaging students in volunteer practice and visual anthropology during short field trips in Southeast Asia.
Our first field-trip was to the UNESCO world heritage city of Luang Prabang in Laos where the team volunteered with a local NGO literacy project. This public lecture will begin with a digital photographic exhibition, followed by student’s reflections on the lived experiences of volunteering.
We conclude that engagement is a reciprocal practice where we are receiving and learning as much as giving and teaching.
The Vice Chancellor and President of JCU, Professor Sandra Harding, will open the event. |
