Food is an important part of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. To commemorate the International Day of the Tropics, listen to a panel of experts consider aspects of food security and sustainable food supply in a global and local Singapore context.

Associate Professor Jennifer Cobcroft
Associate Professor (Aquaculture), James Cook University
Moderator

Associate Professor Jennifer Cobcroft is the founding academic in the aquaculture teaching and research program at the Singapore campus of James Cook University (JCU). She has over 20 years’ experience in aquaculture, largely focused on solving challenges in the hatchery production of marine fish species. Previously, Jennifer consulted in the strategic planning of emerging aquaculture research opportunities in Australia, marine fish hatchery trouble-shooting (Australia, New Zealand, USA and Mexico), and in aquaculture development in eastern Africa (Tanzania and Kenya) and in South East Asia (Vietnam, Indonesia, Myanmar and Singapore). She is the current Secretary of the World Aquaculture Society (WAS), and a former Board member of the Asian Pacific Chapter of WAS.

Professor Iain Gordon
Deputy Vice Chancellor, Tropical Environments and Societies
James Cook University

Iain joined James Cook University in 2015 as Deputy Vice Chancellor for Tropical Environments and Societies. He is passionate and committed to sustainable regional development and harnessing the tropics’ enormous potential through education and research. Prior to his current role he was the CEO & Director of the James Hutton Institute, the largest research institute in the UK specialising in agriculture, environment and rural development. He has an international reputation for applied research excellence particularly in the context of the biodiversity management, ecosystem services provided by agricultural landscapes and engaging human communities in the management of natural resources. He recently published a book on Food production and nature Conservation: Conflicts and Solutions (Routledge 2016).

Dr. George Jacobs

Dr George Jacobs is the volunteer president of Vegetarian Society (Singapore). He is a frequent guest at events where he explains the health, environment, and kindness benefits of plant based diets. He has authored many books, articles, and Forum Page letters on these topics. In addition to his own writing, George enjoys teaching academic writing at the Singapore campus of James Cook University

Professor Dean Jerry
Dean of Research, James Cook University

Professor Dean Jerry is the Dean of Research at the Singapore campus of James Cook University. He is also the Director of the ARC Research Hub for Advanced Prawn Breeding, and the Deputy Director JCU Centre for Sustainable Tropical Fisheries and Aquaculture (Australia).

His primary area of research focus and expertise is in the application of genetic technologies to the improvement of farmed aquatic organisms.  He has worked with aquaculture species for 17 years and over this time has built a large internationally recognised research team in aquaculture genetics which has been instrumental in the development of genetic tools and knowledge to inform selective breeding programs for numerous tropical aquatic farmed species.

Professor Ng How Yong
Deputy Head (Administration) of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, National University of Singapore

Professor Ng How Yong is a Deputy Head (Administration) of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the National University of Singapore (NUS). He is also the Director of the Sembcorp-NUS Corporate Laboratory funded by National Research Foundation and Sembcorp Industries Ltd. His research focuses on biological treatment processes, membrane bioreactor and environmental sustainability through resource recovery. He is part of the Safe Water Gardens project.

Ms Pui Cuifen Senior Environmental Scientist at DHI &
Co-Founder of Foodscape Collective

An environmental scientist, Cuifen's interest in food sustainability was sparked during her gap year in Australia. She found farmer markets, knowing your farmer, eating local, farm to table, growing food with neighbours eye-opening. Inspired by her experiences and participation in a Youth Encounter with Sustainability course, Cuifen went on to create an edible garden with neighbours. She also co-founded Foodscape Collective, a network of people who care about food issues in our food-scapes, and take on responsibility of building more sustainable food systems that nourish environment and / or people, through conscious choices and actions we make.

Mr Darren Ho
Head of Citizen Farmer, Edible Garden City

Mr Darren Ho is the Head of Citizen Farm, Singapore’s first and only closed-loop urban farm. After completing his studies in Economics and Natural Resource Management (BSc) at the University of Western Australia, Darren gained a wealth of industry exposure through work stints in a variety of farms around the world. Over the course of a decade in agriculture, Darren has been featured in local and international news for his role in leading the sustainability and urban farming cause in Singapore.

As part of the leadership team in Edible Garden City and a champion of the “Grow Local, Eat Local” movement, Darren is driven to scale up urban farming in Singapore to share the benefits of agriculture and horticulture with our community. It is his dream to see humanity live in perfect harmony with nature, empowered by technology.

Dr. Wang Pengji
Senior Lecturer (Business), James Cook University

Dr Wang Pengji is a Senior Lecturer of Business at the Singapore campus of James Cook University. She received her B.A degree in management and M.A. in industrial economics from Nankai University, China. She is currently pursuing her PhD in Strategy and Policy at National University of Singapore.

Prior to joining JCU, she actively conducted research on M&A, family business and international business as part of her PhD program. Her doctoral research focuses on the effects of institutional environment on organizations’ symbolic restructurings.

Professor Stewart Lockie
Director, The Cairns Institute, James Cook University

Prof Lockie received a PhD in Sociology from Charles Sturt University in 1997. The focus of this research, the evolution and impacts of environmental policy in agriculture, has since been extended to studies of biodiversity conservation, environmental standards, markets in ecosystem services, food security, coastal management, resource development, management of natural and industrial hazards etc.

Prof Lockie has received over AUS$3 million in external funding including four Australian Research Council grants (three as Sole Chief Investigator) and he has published well over 100 peer reviewed books, journal articles and book chapters. The quality of this work was acknowledged in 2012 in his election to the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia. Prof Lockie also has considerable leadership experience, having led research centres and schools at Central Queensland University, the Australian National University and James Cook University.
