JCU Success Workshop: Managing Stress and Burnout
Stress effects everyone and comes in all forms and sizes. Day today hassles, worries and uncertainties create stress, which greatly impacts our personal and professional lives. Stress has serious implications for our physical and emotional well-being. Therefore, it is important for us to consciously take time out to recognize and manage our stress. While most people are able to identify their stressors, not all are able to successfully manage them. Un-managed chronic stress can be corrosive and can potentially lead to burnout. Since stress and burnout are connected, we can lower the chances of being burnt out by managing the causes and symptoms of stress and taking preventive action. In fact, effective stress management can help us become resilient and empowered.
To help the students manage their stress we have planned two workshops, which will focus on delivering the road-map to a healthier, happier and fulfilling life.
In workshop 1, participants will be guided to identify stressors and recognize symptoms of burnout. They will learn how to effectively cope with stress at work, at home and in life generally using practical stress management techniques and tools.
In workshop 2, participants will be familiarised with strategies for building greater focus in order to optimize their performance at work/school.

Dr Jagdeep Kaur Sabharwal is an educational professional with an expertise in well-being and Mindfulness training. She has worked for many years as a trainer before she shifted career and took up teaching and research at the James Cook University. She is well versed in delivering lectures in diverse international classroom environments. As well as teaching, Jagdeep has supervised multiple postgraduate and undergraduate research projects.
