Research Spotlight Series #1 - Urban Lifestyle, Climate‐Driven Environmental Exposures and Health Consequences
When: 31 March 2026, 4pm to 5pm
Location:
C2-14, Sims Drive Campus
Professor Andreas Lopata’s Research Spotlight explores how urban lifestyles and climate-driven environmental changes are reshaping human exposure to allergens and related health risks, particularly across tropical and rapidly urbanising regions. Drawing on his internationally recognised work in molecular allergy, immunology and food safety, he will examine emerging patterns in food and environmental allergies, including the growing burden among adults and ageing populations. Integrating molecular, clinical, and population-level perspectives, the talk highlights how climate change, biodiversity shifts, and urban living intersect to influence immune responses and chronic inflammatory disease. This session underscores the urgency of advancing tropical health research to inform prevention, diagnosis, and policy in a changing global environment.

Speaker
 | Professor Andreas Lopata Professor, Food Safety, Tropical Futures Institute, James Cook University (Singapore Campus) Professor, Personal Chair, Marine Biology & Aquaculture, James Cook University Professor Andreas Lopata heads the Molecular Allergy Research Laboratory within the College of Science and Engineering and the Australian Institute of Tropical Health & Medicine and leads the 'Seafood and Human Health' program within the Centre for Sustainable Tropical Fisheries and Aquaculture.
Professor Lopata is globally known for his work in food allergies, with the primary focus on applying molecular immunology and biotechnology to improve allergic reactions to seafood and monitor allergenic food protein exposure. His research in Food Safety are very multidisciplinary ranging from improved diagnosis of food allergy to the development of immunotherapy for sensitised consumer and quantification of allergens in food products. He is a strong supporter of the development of alternative food proteins to feed our fast-growing world population. His team develops robust food safety assessment protocols for alternative food products derived from plants, edible insects or cell based meat, in collaboration with the food industry.
Professor Lopata’s team uses cutting-edge molecular, cellular and population-based approaches in characterising the interactions of different food protein sources with the human immune system.
