Quality Policy

Through continual improvement, James Cook University is focused and committed in providing high quality learning programs in a research-rich environment for its students within the environmental, legal and regulatory framework of Singapore

Environmental Policy

JCU respects our relationship with the natural environment and its life-sustaining ecosystems and recognises the need to maintain and restore a rich biodiversity. The University acknowledges the adverse impacts that human activity can impose and takes actions to prevent degradation of our natural systems, while supporting the repair and recovery of those systems. The University commits to the following principles and practices:

  1. Fostering the sustainable use of the Earth’s resources by “treading lightly”
  2. Managing, monitoring and measuring environmental performance and establishing objectives and targets to minimise these impacts.
  3. Communicating our environmental performance to Stakeholders through the EHS Meeting and Report. Reducing the consumption of resources associated with operations (e.g. energy, water, paper).
  4. Minimising waste production and maximising the amount reused and recycled.
  5. Considering environmental aspects in the procurement of products and services through vendor selection and endeavouring to ensure suppliers/contractors meet high standards of environmental performance.
  6. Ensuring that all new capital works programs incorporate comprehensive environmental sustainability initiatives.
  7. Committing to the principles of pollution prevention and continual improvement.
  8. Recognising that all staff have a responsibility to assist the University to meet the commitments in this policy.
  9. Empowering staff to minimise our environmental impacts through raising staff awareness and encouraging participation in environmental management practices (particularly through the Earth Hour and Environmental Week).
  10. Working closely with our employees, contractors, suppliers, clients, students and the community to develop and implement environmental initiatives.
  11. Providing leadership to the community and industry by demonstrating best practice methods of delivering sustainable initiatives.
  12. Complying with ISO14001: 2015 Environmental Management System with all relevant and applicable environmental registration and regulation.
  13. Relevant policy are documented, implemented and maintained. Communicating this policy to all employees, contractors and other stakeholders as well as making this policy available to the general public. Policies are reviewed regularly to ensure that it remains relevant and appropriate to the University for continuous improvement.
  14. Maintaining and enhancing biodiversity at our campuses and sites, particularly in natural areas.
  15. This policy will be available to all University stakeholders.

Occupational Health and Safety Policy

James Cook University Singapore (University) commits to the following principles and practices:

  1. Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Management System comprises objectives, plans, procedures, processes and guidelines delivered via training, instruction and supervision designed to eliminate or minimise the risk of work related injury or illness. OH&S Policy will be documented, implemented, maintained and reviewed regularly to ensure that it remains relevant and appropriate to the University for continuous improvement.
  2. The Occupational Health and Safety Management Representative (OH&S-MR) with the knowledge and tools required to actively undertake positive steps towards demonstrating due diligence within their areas of influence and control.
  3. Details of its OH&S expectations will be included in the Business Plan and Job Description of OH&S-MR and Admin and Facilities Staff. Professional development training will be provided to OH&S-MR, Admin and Facilities Staff, EHS Committee Members and relevant parties.
  4. Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Committee structure comprising of  staff representative from individual department of the University to facilitate the effective communication, consultation and co-ordination of health, safety and environment matters with the intent that they are aware of their individual OH&S obligations.
  5. Complying with OHSAS18001:2007 Occupational Health and Safety Management System with all relevant and Ministry of Manpower (MOM), Workplace Safety and Health Council (WSH) and other government agency legislative requirements and other relevant requirement to which the University subscribes that relate to its OH&S hazards.
  6. Appropriate resources to allow individuals to carry out health, safety and environment functions.
  7. Maintained facilities and environments in which individuals carry out James Cook University work, study or research.
  8. Comprehensive insurance coverage (Medical, Travel, International SOS) will provide additional support to staff in Occupational, Health and Safety. Work Life Balance Policy and flexible working arrangement can be provided to staff when needed.
  9. This policy will be available to all University stakeholders.
