Finding Possibility Through Persistence and a Grateful Heart
Finding Possibility Through Persistence and a Grateful Heart
Marisol Ovalle Munoz, an alumna who studied a Diploma of Higher Education (Majoring in Business Studies) and a Bachelor of Business (Majoring in Marketing for the Digital Age) at James Cook University's Singapore and Australia campuses, learned that dedication makes anything possible. She found that perseverance, support from others and gratitude helped her overcome challenges and appreciate the abundance in her life.

1. What are you up to right now?
I’m currently the Managing Director of PT Essence Creative Solutions, based in Indonesia. The company is known for its fragrance wholesale business as well as digital marketing services.
2. Can you tell us more about your current role and why you decided to take on this role?
After losing my job in the food and beverage industry in Singapore during COVID-19, I made the decision to return to university to upgrade my professional skills. I approached my studies with an entrepreneurial mindset, applying everything I learned with the intention of starting something of my own. That vision eventually became reality when I established my company in Indonesia. The knowledge I gained through my course subjects, combined with my professional experience, proved invaluable, not only for advancing my career but also for laying a solid foundation for the business.
3. If you could highlight one memorable experience in your career journey/experience so far, what would that be?
One of the most memorable experiences in my entrepreneurship journey was the intense period when I was managing multiple challenges within my business. I had made a significant investment and was determined not to let it fail. I remember waking up at 4am daily, fueled by a litre of coffee, just to keep up with the demands. It was exhausting, but my drive kept me going. Interestingly, I often found inspiration and solutions to my business challenges during unexpected moments, sometimes even through deep conversations or questions in professional settings. I would frame the issues I was facing in a broader context, ask targeted questions, and use the insights to steer my company forward.
4. What are some of the lessons learned or challenges faced?
I learned that everything is possible through dedication. When you have a goal in mind and never give up, things will work out in the end. I was fortunate to have people around me to motivate me when I was down and when I thought things were impossible to achieve. I also learned the power of gratitude. Being grateful for everything I had at that moment not only brought me peace but also opened my eyes to the abundance in my life.
5. How do you feel studying at the Singapore campus of James Cook University has helped you in your career?
JCU has truly empowered me with confidence in my industry. Thanks to the university’s support, I gained valuable insights on applying my knowledge in a practical work setting.
One of the things I appreciate most is the diverse blend of perspectives in their lectures, which bring together insights from all over the world. The university ingrained in me the significance of ethics and community. Understanding the impact of our actions and the importance of giving back has deeply resonated with me.
Moreover, I’ve learned to think critically about the environment and the role we can all play in creating a sustainable future. JCU consistently emphasises that values are crucial – not just in business but in all aspects of life. I’ve realised the importance of caring for those around me, as my decisions can significantly affect others. It’s a powerful reminder that we all share a responsibility to make positive choices in our lives.
6. What would be your advice for current students?
JCU focuses not only on rote learning but also on enhancing the application of theoretical knowledge through real-life case scenarios. I was astonished to find that the assessments included practical corporate tasks.
My advice to students is, it's easy to get caught up in distractions during our time as students, especially when studying in a different country. But when we take a moment to reflect, we realise that investing our energy in education can truly make a difference.
7. Lastly, JCU's strategic intent is ‘Creating a brighter future for life in the Tropics and beyond, through education and research that makes a difference locally, and globally’. How do you think you have made (or are making) a difference?
I believe I am making a difference through my work in digital marketing, with a strong emphasis on sustainability. By creating innovative marketing strategies, I’m helping brands connect with their customers in meaningful ways, shaping how consumers experience products that influence everyday life. Whether it’s through sustainability initiatives, crafting engaging stories, or driving awareness of local Southeast Asian businesses on a global stage, I’m contributing to a more informed and connected world. Additionally, the ability to work across international markets, such as Southeast Asia and beyond, has allowed me to create strategies that promote business growth and enhance the cultural and economic fabric of the regions we serve.
