Research Spotlight Series #3 - From Data to Decisions: Enabling Resilient Infrastructure Systems

When: 21 July 2026, 4pm to 5pm
Location: C2-15, Sims Drive Campus

Modern infrastructure systems are increasingly complex, interconnected, and exposed to disruption. This highlights the growing need for infrastructure systems that are not only efficient but also resilient. This presentation explores how data can be transformed into actionable decisions to enhance system performance and resilience. Drawing on recent research, Dr Lijuan Shen demonstrates how system behaviour and disruptions can be better understood, anticipated, and managed. Through real-world examples, the session illustrates how data-driven approaches support earlier intervention, effective planning, faster recovery, and adaptive responses under uncertainty, enabling organisations to move from reactive operations to proactive and resilient decision-making.

Speaker

Dr Lijuan Shen
Senior Lecturer, Data Science
James Cook University (Singapore Campus)

Dr Lijuan Shen is a Senior Lecturer in Data Science at the School of Science and Technology, James Cook University (Singapore). Her research focuses on developing data-driven approaches to improve the resilience of complex infrastructure systems. Working at the intersection of data science and systems resilience, she investigates methods to understand, assess, and improve how complex systems perform under disruption and uncertainty. Her work integrates statistical modelling, machine learning, and optimisation to support informed and effective decision-making. Her research spans areas including predictive maintenance, fault detection, degradation modelling, and resilience assessment, with applications in real-world infrastructure systems. She has published over 40 peer-reviewed articles in leading international journals.
