Ethics, Organisations and Society #1 - Environmental Corporate Social Responsibility and Its Role in Shaping Business Model Innovations of Developing Economy SMEs
This paper aims to address an existing theoretical and practical gap regarding explanations on environ-mental corporate social responsibility (ECSR) and its connectedness with developing economies market-level constructs such as business model innovation (BMI). The presentation suggests a systems approach that incorporates the social network and stakeholder theories to establish ECSR as a critical resource by which developing economy Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) can improve the way the firms position to offer higher value to their markets. The paper argues that SMEs can become more environ-mentally conscious and responsible in the pursuit of their businesses through interventions from the broader environmental actors. The paper presents a conceptual framework that guides policymakers and future research endeavours in understanding the interrelatedness between ECSR and BMI of developing economy SMEs for improved value creation, delivery, and capturing.

 | Professor Emmanuel Adegbite Emmanuel Adegbite is ranked top 0.2% in the world in governance research, top 0.3% in the world in corporate governance research and top 1% in the world in accounting research by ScholarGPS life-time 2024 rankings, which also ranked him 36th (lifetime) and 26th (prior five years) in the world in terms of corporate governance research quality. He is also placed in the top 0.5% of all scholars (in all fields) worldwide. Emmanuel is professor of accounting and corporate governance at Nottingham University, UK and a visiting professor in management and governance at James Cook University, Singapore. He works closely with business leaders and policy influencers in implementing good corporate governance standards, and in developing strategies for instrumental corporate social responsibility. He served on the committee that wrote the 2022 National Corporate Governance Code for Ghana, and also on the committee that developed the 2024 continental (African) Director Development Programme Framework for the African Corporate Governance Network. |

 | Dr Ayodotun Stephen Ibidunni Ayodotun Stephen Ibidunni is an Associate Professor of Strategic Management and Entrepreneurship and the Head of the Innovation, Intrapreneurship, and Entrepreneurship (IIE) Programme at James Hope University, Lagos, Nigeria. He also Heads the Directorate of Enterprise and Innovation (DEI) of James Hope University. His research interests cover the interception of strategic management and entrepreneurship practices of firms in developing economies. He has contributed to more than 130 articles in highly referred international journals, book chapters, and conferences, including Technological Forecasting and Social Change, the Journal of Technology Transfer, Managerial and Decision Economics, the Journal of African Business, and the Journal of Workplace Learning. He is an Associate Editor of RAE-Revista de Administração de Empresas. Dr. Ibidunni actively leads industry related projects that continue to support the quality of his research and teaching. |
