Team Tecknologia from JCU in Singaporedevelops AI-powered solution to simplify troubleshooting across different machine log formats.
A team of students from the School of Science and Technology at the Singapore campus of James Cook University (JCU in Singapore) was recognised as finalists in the National AI Student Challenge (NAISC) 2026. Organised by AI Singapore, NAISC brought students from Singapore and the region together to solve real-world industry problems using AI, while developing skills in innovation, collaboration and problem-solving.
Representing JCU in Singapore under the name Team Tecknologia, the students were:
- Dayangku Sarah Nuurul Aliyah Pengiran Omar Ali – Bachelor of Science (Data Science)
- Khin Chan Thar – Bachelor of Science (Data Science)
- Muhammad Haziq Bin Yusri – Bachelor of Science (Data Science)
- Khaing Yati Naing – Bachelor of Information Technology
- Rico Winson Tandoto – Bachelor of Information Technology
The team’s solution, Self-Evolving Log Intelligence System (SELIS), was designed to help organisations analyse machine logs more efficiently.
Machine logs are records generated by software, servers and network devices to capture system activity. However, because different manufacturers use different log formats, analysing information across multiple systems can be slow and labour-intensive. Existing solutions often require extensive manual configuration or become unreliable when systems are updated.
SELIS addresses this challenge by combining traditional parsing methods with artificial intelligence to automatically interpret different log formats. This enables faster troubleshooting, more accurate analysis and improved security, while reducing the need for time-consuming manual work.
"Getting to this point at the competition has been incredibly rewarding. It gave us a platform to apply what we learnt in class to solve a real-world problem while also learning from other talented students across Singapore. Throughout the competition, we strengthened not only our technical skills but also our teamwork, communication and problem-solving abilities. We're so grateful for the guidance from our lecturer Dr Randy Zhu and are proud to represent the university on a national scale," said the team in a joint statement.
"Being selected as finalists in a national competition is a commendable achievement," said Dr Randy Zhu, Lecturer in Information Technology at JCU in Singapore, the team’s mentor over the course of the competition.
"The team's participation reflects their dedication, teamwork, creativity and willingness to challenge themselves beyond the classroom. We hope their journey inspires more students to pursue opportunities in innovation, technology and competitions that enable them to apply their knowledge to real-world challenges," he adds.
JCU in Singapore encourages and supports students to take up such opportunities alongside their regular coursework, where they can put their knowledge and skills to the test in real-world scenarios while gaining valuable experience and credentials.
