JCU in Singapore becomes first local Private Education Institution to launch employability-focused initiative for youths in ASEAN through the Singapore-ASEAN Youth Fund

James Cook University in Singapore worked with Singapore Polytechnic to launch this pilot employability program  for ASEAN youth and beyond, supported by the National Youth Council’s Singapore-ASEAN Youth Fund (SAYF). This is the first time that the university has collaborated with the NYC through the SAYF, an initiative that aims to promote greater interaction among ASEAN youth.

James Cook University in Singapore (JCU in Singapore) recently partnered with Singapore Polytechnic School of Business (SP) to roll out a pilot program aimed at nurturing globally minded youth leaders. This pilot programme, which was held from 10 to 19 June 2025, was supported by the National Youth Council (NYC) through the Singapore-ASEAN Youth Fund (SAYF).

Titled “Global Networker Series: Connecting Minds Worldwide”, the initiative brought together 30 students – 15 from each institution – for a three-part workshop series designed to acquaint participants with global communities, boost international networking confidence, as well as cultivate creativity and innovation across borders. Students from JCU in Singapore were from ASEAN countries, and students from SP were Singaporeans and Permanent Residents.

Elements of employability were embedded in the development of the program, which included a series of workshops designed to empower ASEAN youth to walk away as individuals who are comfortable interacting with international peers and with an increased awareness around cultural understanding.

This is the first time that JCU in Singapore has collaborated with the NYC through the SAYF,  an initiative that aims to promote greater interaction among ASEAN youth.

“During the workshops, we saw such positive synergy between JCU in Singapore and SP students, reinforcing our goals of connecting local and international students. These moments serve as living proof that the initiative’s mission to foster global communities and encourage meaningful cross-cultural engagement was brought to life,”   says Michelle Thrash, Senior Manager of Student Careers at JCU in Singapore.

“The Global Networker Series helped me appreciate how cultural awareness shapes meaningful connections – both personally and professionally. I’ve gained a clearer understanding of cultural dimensions and the importance of learning about others before reaching out. Along the way, I made great friends, discovered new perspectives, and built confidence in networking with purpose.”

“I really enjoyed the Global Networker Series, especially that it included an off-campus workshop which made the experience more exciting and meaningful. Connecting with friendly students from Singapore Polytechnic was a highlight, and the sessions offered valuable insights on global communities, cross-cultural collaboration, and future-ready perspectives.”
