James Cook University (JCU) in Singapore, through its Tropical Futures Institute, signed a Research Collaborative Agreement with Adisseo on 12 December 2019.

As a world leader in tropical aquaculture research and development, as well as training, James Cook University has expertise in the major research pillars of aquaculture — including nutrition, aquatic animal health, genetics, environmental management, and technology — and delivers its research in Singapore through its Tropical Futures Institute.

On the other hand, Adisseo is a world leader in nutritional solutions and additives for animal feed. The company is engaged in the research, development, manufacturing, marketing and sale of a large range of products and services to improve the quality of animal feed and aims to feed the planet in a high-quality, affordable, safe and sustainable way.

The agreement expands collaboration between the two organisations, and builds upon JCU’s and Adisseo’s leadership in aquaculture and nutritional solutions in animal feed respectively.

Under the agreement, JCU and Adisseo hope to strengthen research relating to increasing productivity and health outcomes of aquaculture species, particularly on feed additives, health by nutrition and life cycle analysis. These efforts may also be referred to as “Research Programmes”.

Additionally, a Steering Committee of four members, comprising two representations each from JCU and Adisseo, was formed under the agreement to oversee the performance and completion of the Research Programmes.

The initial members of the Steering Committee:

• Professor Dean Jerry – Dean of Research for James Cook University in Singapore
• Associate Professor Katheline Hua – Research Fellow in Aquaculture at James Cook University in Singapore
• Dr Stefan Jakob – Director of R&D Nutrition & Health at Adisseo
• Mr David Bal – Head of R&D Aquaculture at Adisseo

Commenting on the agreement, Professor Jerry said, “JCU and Adisseo are excited to work together to conduct nutritional research into the beneficial effects of feed additives on growth and animal health of important aquaculture species, including barramundi and shrimp.”

These efforts open doors for study into new areas of aquaculture research that will benefit the discipline.
