In order to keep up with fast-expanding economies, James Cook University equips students with the necessary skills to tackle the growing needs of the business world, and provides opportunities for them to thrive. This is demonstrated with the signing of an MOU between James Cook University, Singapore and IMA on 3 June 2019.

This MOU aims to foster an understanding between James Cook University, Singapore and IMA, and in turn enable the two institutions to assist and support each other.

Accounting is the backbone of business and an entry to a vibrant career,” said Dr Desti Kannaiah, Senior Lecturer, School of Business in the Singapore campus of James Cook University. “Accounting skills are very much in demand across the world, and accounting has become a dynamic career.”

Spanning a global network of more than 125,000 members in 150 countries and 300 professional and student chapters, IMA is one of the largest and most respected associations that focuses exclusively on advancing the management accounting profession.

Headquartered in Montvale, New Jersey, USA, IMA provides localised services through its four global regions – The Americas, Asia/Pacific, Europe, and Middle East/India – and supports the management accounting profession through a number of areas:

  1. Research
  2. The CMA (Certified Management Accountant) certification program
  3. Continuing education
  4. Networking and advocacy of the highest ethical business practices

One of the main thrusts of this MOU is to promote collaboration in developing specific programs that create opportunities for students to achieve the CMA certification. Becoming a CMA provides greater credibility and recognition, thus increasing the chances of career success in the management accounting field.

IMA will also provide support and share best practices, along with their expert knowledge on the enhancement of management accounting, to enable students who wish to achieve the CMA certification.

Additionally, IMA will encourage and support activities organised by the Singapore campus of James Cook University to further the management accounting profession, especially of those in pursuit of the CMA certification.

Meanwhile, joint seminars, conferences, common research projects, and publications will be developed on IMA, the CMA certification, and the accounting profession. This allows students to obtain information about the profession, as well as the opportunities available to accounting and finance professionals.

What’s more, IMA will provide scholarships to Top 10 endorsed program students from the Singapore campus of James Cook University.

“James Cook University’s Accounting degree is one degree with 360-degree possibilities. This is the accounting degree that gives students the education to succeed in anything in the business world,” said Dr Desti. “Our accounting graduates are professional, eloquent, global, and respectable, and have become licensed to pursue CPA, ACCA & CMA certification.”

Overall, this MOU opens up rewarding opportunities for students taking up Accounting programs at the Singapore campus of James Cook University, while enhancing their personal brand and paving the way for career success.
