The 2nd Joint Higher Degree by Research Conference is co-hosted in 2022 by James Cook University, Singapore (JCUS), the University of Reading Malaysia (URM), and Taylors University (TU).

This year we’ve opted for a blended mode to facilitate networking between and amongst candidates from each of our partner institutions. Saturday 3 December will be devoted to a full day of research presentations. Sunday 4 December offers a half-day of networking.

Postgraduate Passages: Navigating Research & Networking in the Next Normal

The conference committee invites all postgraduate higher degree by research candidates from JCUS, URM and TU to submit research abstracts for presentations and discussions during the 2^nd Joint Higher Degree by Research Conference.

Full-paper presentation sessions will be 30 minutes, with 20 minutes to present and 10 minutes Q&A. The schedule of presentations will be available in October 2022. Presenters will be awarded a certificate for participation and can count their presentation into Professional Research Development hours as relevant for their respective institution. We encourage submissions regardless of your current stage of progress; even those at the beginning can present proposals or literature reviews.

Up to 1000 SGD of prizes will be awarded. Criteria will be determined by the committee and announced via this conference site.

• Conference: 3-4 December 2022

Any abstract submitted after the deadline will not be considered. Abstracts should be written in the following format:

1. Font: Times New Roman, double spacing, size 12
2. Word limit: 200-300 words
3. 2 to 5 keywords
4. Please include the name and affiliation of the primary author and supervisors or other co-authors.
5. Indicate the country in which you are currently based
6. Indicate the primary discipline of your research
7. Indicate your stage of progress (i.e., year 1/beginning, year 2/middle, year 3-4/end)

The primary author will be notified of the review committee’s selection by October 2022. Additional instructions for the conference will be provided then.

Keynote Title & Description: Research Contribution in Academia

As new researchers, the search for contribution to knowledge can be exciting as well as perplexing. For some, it’s overwhelming when the area of research is well established or loss of research focus when it’s an emerging field of study. I reflect on these challenges and offer some pointers especially for early career researchers.

Speaker Profile

Professor Teck Yong Eng   Professor of Business Enterprise & Analytics, Head of Henley Business School Malaysia Prior to joining HBS Malaysia, Prof. Eng was head of the department of digital and data-driven marketing at the University of Southampton, Southampton Business School UK. He had worked in the UK for almost 27 years, and had been chair of marketing and head of department for almost 10 years at three different business schools in the UK. Prof. Eng’s research revolves around solving non-trivial resource allocation decisions at firm or business units level for optimizing profitability, creating stakeholders’ value and maximizing utility function by developing analytics and using advanced research methods. Prof. Eng’s teaching interests include digital marketing, data analytics, R statistical programming and business research methods. He has run many workshops and executive training sessions on big data analytics and advanced quantitative methods for researchers and practitioners. His leadership and methodological competencies are recognised both in the academy and industry. Prof. Eng has consulted for the Business Monitor International London in developing information and communications technology country-level metrics and written over 50 country reports. He regularly consults and writes for policy think tanks and practitioners. He has served as an advisory member of the European Research Council (ERC) for a large grant on commercialisation of nanotechnology. He has also written practitioner-oriented policy papers for the Royal Mail (UK) and The Guardian Newspaper (UK). He is Managing Editor of the Journal of General Management, a well recognized practitioner oriented journal with over 40 years of publication history. Prof. Eng is also an active trainer and keynote speaker. He has published over 60 research articles in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings, guest co-edited special issues, and book chapters.
