(Dr Thomas Chong receiving the Service to Education Award (Gold))

Associate Director of External Relations at James Cook University in Singapore, Dr Thomas Chong, was awarded the Service to Education Award (Gold).

James Cook University (JCU) in Singapore is committed to building meaningful relationships to enhance an understanding of the University’s impact across communities, as well as to develop greater opportunities for students and research at JCU.

On 25 January 2021, Dr Thomas Chong – Associate Director of External Relations at JCU in Singapore – was awarded the Service to Education Award (Gold) for his service to education for more than 20 years, mostly at Tampines Primary School where he last served as Vice-Chairman of its School Advisory Committee. Dr Chong, a Woodlander of 23 years, previously received the Service to Education Award (Bronze) in 2004 and the Service to Education Award (Silver) in 2009.

In his role at JCU, Dr Chong works on external relations on behalf of the University, interacting with industry partners, embassies and government agencies.

The Service to Education Award is given to members of public who have volunteered their services to schools under the Ministry of Education (MOE) in Singapore. It recognises significant contributions to these schools, working closely with the principals, staff and students to support school programmes, promote students’ well-being and create opportunities for collaboration between the community and the school.

This notable achievement is an example of the incredible talent behind James Cook University in Singapore, and underscores our commitment to excellence as well as our dedication to building our presence in Singapore.

Commenting on the award, Dr Chong said, “Many people go the extra mile to volunteer so I try to learn to do the same, to pay it forward.”

As JCU continues to grow and expand, we remain committed to advancing opportunities for the JCU community, and ensuring that our teaching, learning and research deliver in meaningful ways.
