James Cook University in Singapore and SAFRA are collaborating on an educational sponsorship programme.

Earlier this year, James Cook University (JCU) in Singapore signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with SAFRA to provide educational sponsorships to NSmen who wish to pursue higher education with JCU to upgrade themselves under the “SAFRA Bond-Free Education Scheme”. To reaffirm as well as strengthen this relationship, SAFRA visited the Singapore campus of JCU on 8 February 2021, where JCU shared more information about the University and provided a tour of the Campus to showcase JCU’s study environments and facilities.

SAFRA is an association established in 1972 to recognise the contributions of SAF NSmen to National Defence.

To be considered for the scheme, applicants must have completed full-time National Service and be valid SAFRA members.

In the agreement, JCU will offer 15 places in the calendar year of 2021 at 50 per cent of the full programme fee to individual eligible SAFRA members who will be joining JCU as new students. The MOU was signed between Professor Chris Rudd OBE, Deputy Vice Chancellor and Head of Campus, Singapore at JCU, and Mr Donald Tan, Deputy CEO (Business Strategies) of SAFRA.

Mr Tan said, “Education remains an important stepping stone for our NSmen to secure better jobs and develop to their fullest potential in their fields of interest. We are glad to collaborate with JCU to support the aspirations of our NSmen. The sponsorships offered will go a long way in helping them especially in the current economic climate.”

Professor Rudd said, “I am pleased to collaborate with SAFRA to introduce this sponsorship, and provide a greater opportunity for more students to develop their full potential and to enjoy a fulfilling University experience at JCU in Singapore. I look forward to nurturing this relationship, and to the students arriving through this programme.”

Mr Andrew Chew, Director of Marketing at JCU in Singapore, added, “This strategic collaboration signifies our support and commitment to Singapore, while providing more opportunities for SAF NSmen to further their education with JCU.”
