James Cook University welcomed Her Excellency Mrs Tao Thi Thanh Huong, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Embassy of The Socialist Republic of Vietnam in Singapore, to the Singapore campus.

Her Excellency Mrs Tao Thi Thanh Huong – Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Embassy of The Socialist Republic of Vietnam in Singapore – visited the Singapore campus of James Cook University (JCU) with her delegate on 5 March 2021 to learn more about the University as well as discuss possible areas of cooperation between the University and the Vietnamese community.

During her visit, Ambassador Huong received a campus tour to explore and find out more about the University’s various facilities and offerings, including the Aquaculture Research and Teaching Facility and the Financial Lab. The tour offered insights into the University’s efforts in the field of aquaculture, along with research from the University’s academic and research staff and Higher Degree by Research candidates.

Ambassador Huong also had the opportunity to meet with Vietnamese students from JCU, both in-person on campus and virtually, and hear more about their JCU experience. The students shared about what it was like studying at JCU, and the support they received in both face-to-face and online classes, as well as their eagerness to return to campus.

Ambassador Huong said, “Education and training plays a vital role in the growing economy of Vietnam. The government is looking into accelerating the National Digital Transformation Program and implement digital transformation in the education and training sector, and at the same time develop science and technology in Vietnam.”

Professor Chris Rudd OBE, Deputy Vice Chancellor and Head of Campus, Singapore at JCU, said, “It’s a great pleasure to welcome Ambassador Huong to the Singapore campus of JCU. I’m excited for us to work closely together and for us to strengthen our relationship with Vietnam – with the hopes of exploring opportunities for collaboration with universities in Vietnam, in the areas of environmental science, aquaculture, technology, and more.”

Mr Andrew Chew, Chief Commercial Officer at JCU in Singapore, added, “With many students from Vietnam and a strong alumni network, Vietnam is an important and growing market for James Cook University. The visit by Ambassador Huong is a testament to this and opens the door to more opportunities for collaboration with local institutions in Vietnam.”
