James Cook University welcomed His Excellency The Hon Will Hodgman, Australia's High Commissioner to Singapore, to the Singapore campus.

His Excellency The Hon Will Hodgman, Australia's High Commissioner to Singapore, visited the Singapore campus of James Cook University (JCU) with his team on 3 March 2021 to learn more about the University – including the University’s research capabilities, approach to delivering high-quality education, and contributions to the industry.

JCU in Singapore shared about the University’s accomplishments and successes, despite the impact from the COVID-19 pandemic, and areas of research and research strength in key fields such as aquaculture, psychology and technology. In highlighting the collaboration between Australia and Singapore, we recalled our contributions in the Good Science = Great Business 2018 Festival, which also saw the launch of JCU’s Tropical Futures Institute – the first research institute established by an Australian university in Singapore, which aims to deliver world-class research in science, health and social sciences.

During his visit, High Commissioner Hodgman received a campus tour where he had the opportunity to explore the Aquaculture Research and Teaching Facility as well as the Financial Lab. The visit to the Aquaculture Research and Teaching Facility offered a first-hand experience to observe aquaculture research and hands-on exercises at work.

High Commissioner Hodgman said, “I really enjoyed being shown around the JCU Singapore campus. I’m so impressed by this Australian university’s research capability, how it has adapted to the Singapore market and how it has identified the key market sectors of aquaculture, clinical psychology and fintech.”

Professor Chris Rudd OBE, Deputy Vice Chancellor and Head of Campus, Singapore at JCU, said, “It’s a great pleasure to welcome High Commissioner Hodgman to the Singapore campus of JCU, and for us to be able to share more about our initiatives across our various fields of research as well as the successes we’ve managed to achieve thus far. I’m excited to work closely with him and to continue strengthening our relationship with Australia.”

Mr Andrew Chew, Chief Commercial Officer at JCU in Singapore, added, “As we continue to innovate and collaborate, I hope that we can contribute to further deepening the ties between Australia and Singapore in the spirit of creating a brighter future for life in the tropics world-wide through graduates and discoveries that make a difference.”
