DVC Awarded Prestigious Guest Professorship

Professor Chris Rudd OBE, Deputy Vice Chancellor (DVC) and Head of Campus, has been inducted as a guest professor at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

Professor Rudd specialises in research in Advanced Materials to build lightweight engineering structures, and has been supported by several international awards. His team has contributed to the introduction of new materials and processes in the automotive, aerospace, and medical devices industries.

The Ningbo Institute of Materials Technology and Engineering, under CAS, is one of China’s leading providers of engineering research. In their ambitious plans to internationalise the Institute, they are reaching out to international experts for advice and collaboration. As such, it seemed like a natural fit when Professor Rudd was awarded a guest professorship at the institute on 21 May 2019.

This role allows Professor Rudd to share his knowledge and provide guidance on manufacturing composite materials, while fostering stronger ties with the Ningbo Institute of Materials Technology and Engineering, CAS.

Through this guest professorship, Professor Rudd also aims to stimulate research collaboration between James Cook University (JCU) and CAS, focusing on research into composite materials that can reduce weight in transportation systems such as aircrafts, high-speed trains, and automobiles.

“The Chinese Academy of Sciences is one of the world's most prestigious learned societies, as well as the major research provider in China,” says Professor Rudd. “To be honoured in this way is a great privilege for me personally, but I also believe that it will benefit JCU's reputation in the region and enhance our partnership development opportunities.”
