Student Engagement and Education for Sustainability

11 September 2024 Sustainability at JCU Singapore is powered not only by institutional initiatives but also by student-led projects. In 2024, under the leadership of Associate Professor Dr. James Loh, a pioneering project was launched to explore the potential of mealworms in digesting Styrofoam waste. Recognizing that mealworms can survive on Styrofoam, the initiative investigates their role as a natural, sustainable solution for tackling non-biodegradable waste.

Student volunteers drive the project by collecting Styrofoam and managing the feeding process. They oversee the full lifecycle of the mealworms—from larvae to beetles—while ensuring proper care and maintenance of the insects. This hands-on experience not only supports waste reduction but also cultivates student leadership, innovation, and a deeper understanding of ecological solutions.

Beyond the lab, students also inspire peers through sustainability-themed events. Initiatives such as the Trash to Treasure Art Competition (March–April 2025) encourage the JCU community to reimagine waste as a resource, blending artistic expression with environmental awareness.

These efforts highlight how student engagement strengthens education for sustainability, ensuring that the next generation of leaders not only learns about sustainability but also lives it in practice.
