26 October 2023 The Southeast Asia Shark & Ray Research and Conservation workshop, held from September 25-29 in Singapore, represented a significant advancement in shark and ray conservation efforts across the region. This pivotal event was co-organised by James Cook University's Australian and Singaporean campuses and was spearheaded by Dr. Andrew Chin, Senior Research Fellow in Marine & Aquaculture Sciences at James Cook University Australia, and Dr. Neil Hutchinson, Senior Lecturer in Environmental Science at James Cook University Singapore.

Over the course of five days, the workshop brought together 35 participants from 11 countries, including representatives from 23 diverse organisations. These included non-governmental organisations, research institutes, and universities, all united in their commitment to advancing the conservation of sharks and rays. The workshop served as a crucial platform for sharing knowledge, fostering collaboration, and driving forward the conservation agenda for these vital marine species.
