The inbound exchange program enables students from exchange partners to study one or two trimesters at the Singapore campus of James Cook University. There is a wide range of study areas and available subjects for students to select from. The exchange experience is designed to add value to students’ life experience, build their characters and broaden their horizons.

3. Experience a Trimester Model of University Curriculum.

James Cook University, Singapore operates on a trimester system that typically features 4-month study periods shorter than that of the Semester model. In 4 months, students will still clear a semester’s worth of subject credits allowing them to open new opportunities such as time for internships, travel breaks or even possibly faster credit clearance because of the academic calendar difference. Opportunities are, however, subject to the respective study plan context of your home universities.

The Singapore campus of James Cook University has three trimesters. Study abroad students should only choose subjects that are available/offered in their applied intake. At JCU, each subject has a value of 3 credit points (equivalent to 7.5 ECTS). A normal full time study load for a teaching period is four subjects (12 credit points or 30 ECTS).

You can tell if a subject is 1st, 2nd and 3rd level by the first number in the subject code i.e. BU1002 is a level 1 subject while BU2008 is a level 2 subject and BU3102 is a level 3 subject. Most Study Abroad students can only study at 1st, 2nd and 3rd levels depending if prerequisites are met.

On your Application Form, you should list between six to twelve subjects, and ensure the subjects are available, in the Study Period you prefer (SP51, SP52 or SP53). To gain credit for specific subjects at your Home Institution, you will need to liaise with academic advisors at your Home Institution to make sure that the subjects you wish to study at JCU will transfer back as official credits. Subjects that are submitted on the JCU Study Abroad application form are sent to JCU academic advisors for approval based on meeting prerequisites. You will be notified of the outcome in your Letter of Offer.

Step 1: Securing your nomination at your home institution.

  • Please refer to your Home Institution’s exchange application procedures and secure your exchange nomination to the Singapore campus of James Cook University.

Step 2: Applying for admission at James Cook University

  • Upon successful application for exchange placement to James Cook University, an email with specific instructions will be sent directly to you or via the exchange coordinator from your Home Institution. No fees should be paid at this step.
  • Please note that exchange applications process involves various departments at James Cook University. Inbound exchange students should maintain frequent communication with exchange coordinator at James Cook University to ensure clear information and updates are received. It is highly recommended that students frequently check in for advice from James Cook University’s exchange coordinator prior to booking flights and accommodation.
  • Please frequently check the status of your subject and tutorial approval and update your choices if necessary.

Step 3: Applying for student pass

  • Upon completing the initial application for admissions process, you will be guided to complete student pass application process via Singapore immigration’s Solar+ platform. No fees should be paid during this step.
  • Please note that an In-Principle Approval (IPA) Letter for your student pass application will be issued to you by Singapore Immigration and Checkpoint Authority (ICA) upon successful application.
  • Please continue to check the status of your subject and tutorial approval and update your choices if necessary.

Step 4: Receiving IPA Letter and preparing for departure

  • Upon receiving IPA letter, you may proceed to book James Cook University’s pre-arrival services including accommodations, airport pick-up, etc. Please log on to Facilities Booking Online System to request for airport pick-up and accommodation arrangement using your JCUS ID (stated in your student contract) and birthday information.
  • A non-refundable payment for International Student Registration Fee (ISRF) is required to be paid at this step. Click here to see the International Student Registration fee (Study Abroad Courses) amount under “Non-Tuition Fee” section.

Step 5: Pre-commencement formalities

  • Inbound exchange students are required to complete James Cook university’s Reporting and Student Pass formalities session.

1. What are certified copies of documents?

A certified copy means a stamped photocopy signed by a public notary, institution representative or authorized JCU agent/representative as being a true and accurate record of the original document. If documentation is in a language other than English and official certified translation must be included and translated by the issuing institution or by an official translating service.
