Biography

Dr. Harun Harun is a senior lecturer of business (accounting) at Singapore Business School, James Cook University (JCU). Prior to his current appointment, he was invited as a new PhD graduate academic by the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific at the Australian National University in 2012 for several months before joining the University of Canberra as an assistant professor in 2013. Harun has considerable experience in convening and teaching accounting subjects in various countries including the University of Canberra and University of New South Wales in Canberra, Australia and Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) in Hong Kong in a partnership with the University of Canberra.

He has supervised numerous PhD completions as a primary supervisor, secondary supervisor, or as an advisory role. One of his research achievements was to lead the first research grant initiative funded by the ASEAN Federation of Accountants research fund in 2017 and 2018. The study aimed to understand the nature and key institutional challenges faced by small and medium enterprises in the ASEAN region and what roles the accounting profession can play to tackle these challenges in the future. A recent project he involved in was to assist the development of financing mechanisms for the expansion of sustainable electricity in India funded by the Australian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade under the leading of Professor Milind Sathye in 2022 with the University of Canberra, Australia. Additionally, Harun has led or been a team member of various research projects funded by CPA Australia, the ANU Indonesia project and the Australian and New Zealand Accounting and Finance Associations.

His research papers has appeared in leading accounting, business, economic and public administration journals including the Oxford’s Health Policy and Planning; Accounting, Auditing and Accountability Journal; Financial Accountability and Management; Sustainability Accounting, Management and Policy Journal, International Journal of Public Administration, and Public Money and Management.

Research Interests

His primary research interest focuses on using multidisciplinary perspectives and methodologies in understanding practical and research issues as well as strategic solutions related to technology of governance in the private and public sectors, sustainability, and business reporting systems. His other research interests include the policy and implementation of accrual accounting and auditing in the public sector, public-private partnerships, financial literacy, public sector reforms in higher education and public health management.
