Biography

Dr. Maura Carrai is a Senior Research Fellow in Aquaculture Molecular Health at the Tropical Futures Institute, James Cook University, Singapore. She graduated from the University of Pisa’s Faculty of Sciences in 2005 with a Bachelor in Biological Sciences, followed by a master's degree in Bio-Molecular Sciences and then after, a Ph.D. in Microbiology and Genetics from the same University in 2010.

Maura’s research has been widespread and varied from the human to the animal field, and particularly, over these last five years, she has been more focused on virologist studies in several different type of specimens such as cats, dogs, pigs and fish. During a metagenomics analysis, Dr. Maura Carrai discovered new papillomavirus in the cat, named Felis catus papillomavirus 6 (FcaPV6).
