ISO 14001 Environmental Policy

  • ISO 14001 is the international standard that specifies requirements for an effective environmental management system.  It provides a framework that an organization can follow, rather than establishing environmental performance requirements.
  • This management system helps James Cook University on:
    • Improve resource efficiency
    • Reduce waste
    • Drive down costs
    • Provide assurance that environmental impact is being measured
    • Meet legal obligations Improve overall environmental impact

  • What we have done:
    • Electricity
      • All staircases are fitted with LED lightings and light sensors
      • Air-conditioning are put on timers
  • Water
    • JCUS is a PUB certified Water Efficiency Building, fitted with water efficient fittings or appliances
  • Others
    • No Straw on campus
    • Recycling bins located campus wide
    • ECO Office, accredited by Singapore Environment Council
    • ECO F&B, accredited by Singapore Environment Council
    • SG Clean, accredited by NEA
    • JCUS is a non-smoking campus
    • Only using FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified paper from responsible source

Singapore Environment Council – Eco Office (2021, 2018)

  • By attaining the Eco-Office Certification, it affirms our staff and students that James Cook University is taking a serious and firm stance in implementing effective environmentally-friendly practices by increasing eco-consciousness among the stakeholders and effectively reduce the carbon footprints by reducing usage of paper, water and electricity and actively promoting reduce, reuse and recycling.

Singapore Environment Council – Eco F&B (2019)

  • Eco F&B is a certification programme that assesses the environmental management system of a food establishment, in this case, our canteen within James Cook University campus.

  • We work closely with the canteen operator to adopt environmentally-sustainable practices and using green products to reduce carbon footprints and promote sustainability.

GreenDNA (2022)

  • GreenDNA certification demonstrates that James Cook University have led by example in seeing sustainability as a journey rather than a one-time event. Through the achievement, James Cook University continues the journey by engaging the following activities 1) Environmental talks and training 2) Comply with ECO office standards and 3) Monitoring Carbon Emissions Reduction. Our community effort is what we strive to adopt a green mind-set and set in place the basic building blocks for a sustainable workplace.
